How to sew a fabric vase

Vases come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and materials. As well as being practical, they are usually decorative too. This article is dedicated to reinterpreting this accessory, which is found in every household.

Follow these simple steps and use textiles to make a cover for a bottle, providing you with your own fabric vase. Whether you choose fabrics that suit your mood or that work with your current decor, your vase will add a finishing touch to the room. What's more, these bottle covers save space and give old wine bottles a new lease of life. So get out your sewing machine and let's get started!

You will need:

- 2 pieces of fabric (one for the back and one for the front): 17 cm x 37 cm

- Thread

- Wine bottle: 0.75 l

- Sewing machine, scissors, needles, tailor's chalk (or a pen)

1. Download and print our template. Cut along the solid line. Lay the cut-out shape on top of the two pieces of fabric and draw around it. As you draw, add on 1 cm seam allowance at the sides (left and right, see the dashed line). Add on an allowance of 2 cm at the top and the bottom for the seams.

2. Lay the two pieces of fabric on top of one another, right side to right side (pattern facing pattern). Only sew the sides together (backstitch or overlock stitch).

3. Fold down the top and bottom edges twice, by 1 cm each time. Pin in place and stitch down.

4. Turn the fabric vase the right way out and place over a bottle.

Get involved for a chance to win!

They may be bizarre, they may even be downright ugly - but somehow you struggle to part with them. When it comes to vases, opinions differ wildly. Send us a picture of your most unusual vase and you could win two of our fabric vases!
